Description

ZO® Eye and Ear Drops are manufactured by FDC. The active ingredient of the medication is Ofloxacin, second-generation antibiotic from the Quinolones class, also known as Fluoroquinolones.

Indications:

- bacterial eye infections (conjunctivitis, mucopurulent conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, and blepharitis);

- bacterial ear infections (otitis externa, chronic suppurative otitis media with perforated tympanic membranes and acute otitis media in the presence of tympanostomy tubes).

Ofloxacin has been shown to be active against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Propionibacterium acnes, Enterobacter cloacae, Haemophilus influenzae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens.

Do not use ZO® Eye and Ear Drops to treat a viral or fungal infection in the eye or ear.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Ofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, active against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits DNA gyrase (type II topoisomerase, and topoisomerase IV) – an enzyme crucial for separating replicated DNA. This interferes with normal bacterial cell division and results in bacteria death and elimination of the infection as well.

Dosage

For bacterial eye infections:

Conjunctivitis: during days 1-2 instill 1 to 2 drops every two to four hours in the treated eye(s) during first two days; during days 3-7 instill 1 to 2 drops four times daily.

Corneal ulcer: instill 1 to 2 drops in the treated eye(s) every 30 minutes, while awake (awaken at four and six hours after sleeping and instill 1 to 2 drops); during days 3-7 to 9 instill 1 to 2 drops hourly, while awake; during days 7 to 9 instill 1 to 2 drops, four times daily.

In severe infections, apply 2 drops into the treated eye(s) hourly until improvement is obtained following which treatment should be reduced.

For ear infections:

Otitis externa: 10 drops twice daily.

Suppurative otitis media with perforated tympanic membranes: 10 drops twice daily for 14 days.

Precautions:

Ofloxacin solution is not for injection.

Ofloxacin solution is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using drops immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Prolonged use may result in a fungal infection. If superinfection occurs discontinue use and institute alternative therapy.

ZO® Eye and Ear Drops may cause your vision to blur temporarily after you have applied them into your eye. Do not drive or operate machinery until this has worn off.

Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.

Remove contact lenses before using Ofloxacin drops for eye infection.

Wash your hands before using the eye drops.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store at cool room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Use within one month after opening a container. Keep out of the reach of children.
