Description
Ciprodex ophthalmic and otic solution contains two active ingredients Ciprofloxacin (second-generation Fluoroquinolone antibiotic) and Dexamethasone (synthetic member of the glucocorticoid class of steroid hormones), which allows to reduce itchiness, swelling or reddening while fighting and eliminating the infection.
Indications:
- bacterial eye infections (conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, superficial infections of the eye and adnexa);
- bacterial ear infections (otitis externa, acute otitis media, chronic suppurative otitis media);
- alleviating infection symptoms such as irritation, itchiness, swelling or reddening;
- prophylaxis in otic surgeries such as mastoid surgery.
MOA (mechanism of action):
Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic antimicrobial agent that exhibits its bactericidal action through inhibiting the bacterial DNA gyrase enzyme, required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair and recombination. Dexamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that effectively controls the inflammation by inhibiting the release inflammatory mediators. Namely, it involves phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, lipocortins, which control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Ciprofloxacin is effective against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, Proteus mirabilis, Providencia rettgeri, Morganella morganii, Citrobacter diversus, Citrobacter freundii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei.

Day 2: instill 2 drops in the treated eye hourly.
Day 3 - Day 14: instill 2 drops in the treated eye every 4 hours.
Treatment may be continued after 14 days if corneal re-epithelialization has not occurred.

Precautions:
Ciprodex ophthalmic and otic solution is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using drops immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.
Prolonged use of Ciprodex ophthalmic and otic solution may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, discontinue using these drops and institute alternative therapy.
