Description
Phenergan® is manufactured by Abbott and comprises an active ingredient called Promethazine — a first-generation H1-receptor antagonist, antihistamine and antiemetic medication with potent sedative effects.
Indications:
- to treat insomnia in adults (for short-term use);
- to treat allergies due to hay fever or rashes (nettle rash or hives);
- to treat or stop nausea or vomiting (travel sickness);
- to use as a sedative for children aged 5 years and above (for short-term use).
MOA (mechanism of action):
Promethazine, a phenothiazine, is an H1-antagonist with anticholinergic, sedative, and antiemetic effects and some local anesthetic properties. Promethazine inhibits the action of endogenous histamine, which subsequently leads to temporary relief of the negative allergic symptoms. The relief of nausea appears to be related to central anticholinergic actions and may implicate activity on the medullary chemoreceptor trigger zone.
