About Vigamox® Eye Drops

Rating of sales:

Vigamox® eye drops are manufactured by Alcon. The active ingredient of the medication is Moxifloxacin, the fourth-generation, man-made antibiotic from the Fluoroquinolones class.

Vigamox® eye drops are indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis due to aerobic gram-positive microorganisms (Corynebacterium species, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus warneri, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus viridans group); aerobic gram-negative microorganisms (Acinetobacter lwoffii, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Chlamydia trachomatis).

Do not use Vigamox® eye drops to treat a viral or fungal infection in the eye.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Moxifloxacin is a bactericidal antibiotic with a broad-spectrum activity. Moxifloxacin penetrates bacteria and inhibits DNA gyrase (bacterial topoisomerase II) and bacterial topoisomerase IV. Inhibition of DNA gyrase promotes DNA strand breakage while inhibition of topoisomerase IV affects chromosomal stabilization during cell division, thus preventing the separation of newly replicated DNA. This effect of Moxifloxacin results in bacteria death and elimination of the infection.
